Yusuf Meherally Centre’s HELPING HAND to KUTTANAD
As a part of its flood rehabilitation work, Yusuf Meherally Centre (YMC) Mumbai refurbished the Chemistry Lab of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Thalavady , Alleppey. YMC Mumbai is a 55 year old Social organisation working for fulfilling Gandhiji’s idea of Antyodaya and operates in 9 states of India and is always in the forefront at disaster hit areas to give succour to fellow countrymen. Dr. G G Parikh, veteren freedom fighter and Gandhian socialist presides this organization and inspires it’s volunteers to feel and work for the countrymen breaking all ‘narrow domestic walls.’
Yusuf Meherally Centre started its flood relief work in Kuttanad in August 2018. Based at Thalavady we undertook the following work:
1. Dewatering, cleaning and chlorinating 200+ wells by our member volunteers from Uttarakhand, Orissa and U.P.
2. Cleaning and providing provision to 24 Anganwadis
3. Improving and furnishing the auditorium of flood affected Muttar Govt UP School
4. Providing 50 modern chicken cages to families which lost them or damaged in the flood in Kavalam, Nedumudi, Muttar and Thalavady Panchayats.
5. Provided 4 milching cows to those who lost their only livelihood in Edathua, Thalavady villages.
6. Set up RO plant for solving accute drinking water problem in Thalavady South.
7. As a trauma relief for elder citizens we started monthly get-together called THUDAR BALYAM. Started as a forum for relieving their strain and stress of daily life, the program helped the participants to open up, sing and dance. Professional entertainers, artists and counsellors kept them engaged. The program has now developed in to the next stage by formation of cluster wise VAYOJANA SWAYAM SEVA KOOTAYMA. YMC intends to continue handholding and facilitating their group work for active aging.
8. Finally, we concluded our flood rehab work with this Lab which was damaged in the devastating floods of 2018 and refurbished at a cost of Rs. 5.85 lakhs would provide state of the art facility for teaching and learning.
At a simple function on 20th August District Panchayat member Mrs Binu Issac Raju inaugurated the Lab in the presence of Thalavady
Panchayat member Mr. Ajit Pisharat, Eminent educationist and former HM Mr. P V Ravindranath YMC Project Coordinator Mr. Chandramohan Nair YMC, School Principal, PTA officials, Teachers and students.
We thank all peoples’ representatives at Alleppey, teachers for their cooperation and enthusiasm shown to revive and improve the quality of education in this 102 years grant old school.
We also thank the District Sub Collector Mr Krishna Teja, IAS and “I am for Alleppey’ team for guidance and support to YMC for its post flood rehabilitation work in Kuttanad.
We thank all our donors whose support keeps us going and do better and better voluntary work in various parts of the country.
