About Yusuf Meherally Centre (YMC)

Promoting national integration and studying the problems
Yusuf Meherally Centre is a voluntary organization, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.


The Centre was started in 1961 in memory of freedom fighter Yusuf Meherally, and was formally inaugurated in 1966, by Dr. Zakir Husain, the then Vice-President.
The initial objectives of YMC were promoting national integration and studying the problems of urbanization. Later, rural development became its main activity and a large number of activities were taken up in diverse fields at Tara, District Raigad and around. Since the early nineties YMC has been actively engaged in presenting to the nation a replicable model of rural development.

Aims and Objectives of YMC
The Centre is working towards providing health care, education, skill development, empowering women and Adivasis (tribal), employment generation and relief. YMC has projects in Konkan (Maharashtra), Kutch (Gujarat), Nagapattinam (Tamilnadu), Orissa, M.P., U.P., J&K and Kerala.
To do constructive and nation building work among all sections of society.
To undertake rural development activities.
To undertake health and educational activities.
To organize women, youth and self help groups.
To promote and undertake khadi and village industries.
To create awareness of the importance of maintaining ecological balance.
To create employment and to promote employment in several areas.
To provide relief and rehabilitation to victims of natural calamities.
